For more than three decades, Vania Vrondi has devoted her life to preserving the highest traditions of classical ballet while inspiring generations of young artists through excellence in education and performance.

As the Founder and Artistic Director of the Imperial Russian Academy in Limassol, Cyprus, she has established one of the country’s leading performing arts institutions, offering professional education in Classical Ballet, Dance, Musical Theatre, Music and Fine Arts. Her educational philosophy combines the discipline and artistic excellence of the Russian Classical Ballet School with a modern and holistic approach to artistic development.

At the heart of her teaching lies one of the greatest treasures of her professional journey—her direct pedagogical lineage to the legendary Agrippina Vaganova, whose revolutionary method transformed ballet education and continues to shape the world’s finest dancers.

Early Ballet Education

Vania’s first introduction to ballet began at an American School of Classical Ballet in Tripoli, Libya. Her professional ballet education, however, started at the prestigious Belgrade State Ballet School in Serbia, where her dedication, discipline and exceptional talent quickly distinguished her among her peers.

In 1987, she was honoured by the Belgrade City Assembly as Best Ballet Student, recognising her outstanding artistic achievements.

She continued her education in the United States at the School of Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, Ohio (1988–1989), where she received awards for Best Ballet Performance and became a member of the National Honor Society.

These early international experiences shaped her artistic outlook and strengthened her determination to pursue ballet at the highest professional level.

Professional Ballet Career

In 1990, Vania joined the National Theatre in Sarajevo as a professional ballet dancer.

Her repertoire included some of the most celebrated works of the classical ballet tradition, including:

She also performed in contemporary productions including:

Her performances were praised for their elegance, musicality, lyrical expression and passionate stage presence.

Following a national competition, she was awarded a prestigious State Scholarship, enabling her to continue her education in Moscow at one of the world’s foremost institutions for theatre and choreography.

Master’s Degree at GITIS – Moscow

Between 1992 and 1997, Vania studied at the internationally renowned Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow, graduating with a Master of Arts in Classical Ballet and Choreography.

Her education extended far beyond ballet technique and embraced every aspect of professional artistic training, including:

Her professors highly praised both her artistic performance and her original choreographic work.

Her principal tutor was Natalia Orlovskaya, distinguished soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre.

Her Master’s thesis,

“Development of Artistic Expression and Individual Style of Classical Ballet Students in Professional Choreographic Education,”

was examined and approved by ballet legend Vladimir Vasiliev, Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Theatre, together with the celebrated ballerina Olga Lepeshinskaya.

The Vaganova Legacy

One of the most significant and defining influences on Vania’s artistic and pedagogical development was her mentorship under Nabila Galeevna Valitova, celebrated Prima Ballerina of the Voronezh State Theatre.

Valitova was a direct student of the legendary Agrippina Vaganova, the visionary educator who developed and systematised the Vaganova Method—the most influential system of classical ballet training in history and the foundation upon which generations of dancers of the Mariinsky Theatre, Bolshoi Theatre and leading ballet companies around the world have been trained.

She was also a classmate of the legendary Natalia Dudinskaya, one of the greatest ballerinas of the twentieth century.

Through years of close mentorship, Vania had the rare privilege of learning not only the official Vaganova syllabus, but also the artistic philosophy, technical precision, teaching methodology and countless professional insights passed directly from Agrippina Vaganova to her own students.

This authentic pedagogical lineage is exceptionally rare outside Russia. It represents a living connection to one of the world’s greatest ballet traditions and forms the cornerstone of Vania’s teaching philosophy.

Today, she continues to preserve and pass on these principles to every generation of students at the Imperial Russian Academy, ensuring that the excellence of the Russian Classical Ballet School continues to flourish in Cyprus.

Teaching Career & The Birth of the Imperial Russian Academy

After graduating from the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS) with a Master of Arts in Classical Ballet and Choreography, Vania Vrondi began her professional teaching career at the Voronezh State Ballet School in Russia, where she taught according to the renowned traditions of the Russian Classical Ballet School.

She later continued her teaching career at the prestigious Belgrade State Ballet School “Lujo Davičo”, further developing her educational philosophy while combining the discipline of the Russian ballet tradition with valuable international teaching experience.

Inspired by a vision of bringing authentic Russian ballet education to Cyprus, Vania founded the Russian Classical Ballet School in Limassol.

As the Academy grew, so did its artistic vision. In 1999, a Music Department was established, and the school became the Russian Classical Ballet and Music School. Over the following years, additional departments were introduced, including Dance, Musical Theatre, Drama, Fine Arts and Martial Arts, creating a unique multidisciplinary environment where students could develop both artistic excellence and personal confidence.

Reflecting its continuous growth, expanding educational programmes and international outlook, the institution adopted its current name, the Imperial Russian Academy.

Today, the Academy is recognised as one of Cyprus’ leading performing arts institutions, offering high-quality education in Classical Ballet, Dance, Musical Theatre, Music and Fine Arts while preserving the traditions and excellence of the Russian Classical Ballet School.

For more than twenty-five years, thousands of children have discovered their artistic potential through the Academy’s inspiring educational environment, professional training and unforgettable stage experiences.

For more than twenty-five years, under the artistic direction of Vania Vrondi, the Imperial Russian Academy has presented an impressive repertoire of full-length classical ballets, ballet galas, officially licensed Broadway musicals, music concerts and multidisciplinary artistic performances in Cyprus’s leading theatres.

The Academy is dedicated to providing students with exceptional stage experience while preserving the traditions of the Russian Classical Ballet School and promoting excellence in all performing arts.
